Cassidy
Even if it doesn't seem like it to you, I am trying.
Cassidy is a participant of Crab 3, as a member of Monomyth. Originally an office employee, after failing to get to college she found a powerful headset that dragged her into the Moon, where she works for the royal family as a housekeeper and handyman. The same headset makes her mostly invulnerable to anything through its different abilities.
Appearance
Personality
Perhaps due to the nature of her life and headset, Cassidy is a chill and relaxed individual who seems to go along with most everything, responding to most things with dry optimism. Much like her team however, she exhibits some heroic qualities, wanting to help others and being good, trying to defuse situations without violence and to keep civilians alive.
Cassidy shows bravery as well, having no hesitation to fight Kome even after her headset had been destroyed. Her alignment is lawful, being a servant of a royal family, and she considers order to be an important part for keeping people safe and goodwill up, even wholeheartedly aligning with the Empire on Centuria.
Powers and Abilities
Though decisively a mostly average human, Cassidy is bound to her PC Headset “Bunny Ears”, an over-engineered gadget made to keep the wearer safe during space-travel. The headset’s main means of defense is to generate a forcefield around her which pushes back against any dangerous forces - in this regard, Cassidy can be touched, but the moment the touch becomes aggressive it fails to connect. It protects as well from falls, and Cassidy can reconfigure and select different targets as forces to be repelled, allowing her to slide through the floor if needed. The headset includes as well many other survival functionalities. It was able to accelerate Cassidy’s brain processes to space-travel speeds in order to catch up during her final round battle, and to perform some minor healing on her wounds in order to keep her alive.
Outside of this, the headset grants her a series of supplementary abilities, the range and extent of which Cassidy herself does not know. Some shown include the ability to create a strong thread to tether herself to, a change of clothes, generate light or pour a selection of tea. The headset does not seem to work properly against mental/spiritual attacks, though whether the barrier stands to such forces varies between realities. It includes a failsafe in case of destruction, though its capabilities are then limited.
During Round 2, Cassidy was made to be the new Kami of a Temple discovered by Dylan, with several spirits attending to her call. She maintains this form as her “peak” on the final round, allowing her to both take control of Kome’s mindscape to some extent and to summon a variety of spirits to aid her in battle, the strongest ones being two powerful lion guardians. She was able as well to drag Kome into a deeper layer of the spiritual world similar to the one she was trapped in in order to assess her goals.
Cassidy trained with her team often, causing her to become at least a somewhat capable hand to hand combatant by the final round. She was also well versed enough in technology from her world to perform some basic maintenance and repairs on Centurion.
Background
History
Round 1
Z (lost, entry) vs Cassidy (won, entry) in Secret Battle. Match page: C3 R1 - Z vs Cassidy
In Centuria, Z joined the Brotherhood of Shadows, while Cassidy was part of the Empire.
In Z’s reality, they called Cassidy early before the match. They offered Cassidy money and a Lambo (a gift from Oji-san) in exchange for copying Cassidy’s defensive headset abilities. Cassidy inquired why Z wouldn’t copy the Freaks instead, with Z explaining the Freaks’ abilities were undesirable. In the end they shook hands and Cassidy left in her new car, with Z thanking her as a Cassidy shadow materialized.
In Cassidy’s canon reality, the Emperor sent Cassidy along with troops to aid the south coast, but they would have to pass through Forest Alliance territory - dangerous considering the tensions rising between the factions. He equipped her with Luthenil, an ancient sword granted by the elves when they were still allied with the Empire. Cassidy met with Randolph, an empire captain who would be her “second in command” and who showed himself not happy at all to have her on the lead. As they rode on the road (Cassidy on a donkey) she asked him if things could be patched with the Forest Alliance, but Randolph denied it, stating the Emperor had too much a romantic view of the past, and that the elves had killed his wife. They were interrupted by scouts identifying an army of the alliance gathering at the forest, alongside another crab contestant, Z. Z told the elves to prepare for battle, and as the trumpet rang, Randolph convinced Cassidy to rally the empire troops for a battle. A messy battle ensued, Cassidy safe from it thanks to her headset, she rescued Randolph from a battle, but he was promptly stabbed and killed by Z. Cassidy anguished, but Z mocked it, noting all of Centuria’s soldiers were just pieces for the tournament game and that one had already gotten too much attention. Z offered Cassidy to make a deal, but she refused to negotiate with an enemy of the empire, much to Z’s disbelief and annoyance. When Z tried to defeat Cassidy by force, she used the elven blade and cut their hand, knocking them to the ground and catching the attention of all the alliance members. Z accused the Empire of stealing the blade, but the elven commander recognized it had been given to the Empire long ago. Cassidy argued she had used it in self defense and that the elves attacked first, the commander told her they believed the Empire was planning to attack them, but Cassidy explained her mission - with Z insisting the empire had abandoned the coast. In the end, Cassidy offered the sword for safe passage, and seeing the manipulations would not work anymore, Z ran away - with the elven commander promising Cassidy safe passage and hoping this would mean better relationships between the alliance and the empire in the future.
Round 2
Dylan Lucas Mostynn (won, entry) vs Cassidy (lost, entry) in Shinto Shrine. Match page: C3 R2 - Dylan vs Cassidy
In Japan, Dylan had accidentally taken the Yellow Potion, causing him to receive a familiar’s powers and Tomoe’s fox fire from Kamisama Kiss while also bearing the shrine’s blessing. Cassidy drank the kemono potion, giving her cat ears, tails, and reflexes.
In Cassidy’s reality, she decided to visit a shrine in Japan as a part of her Japanese experience. She noted how old the shrine looks. Dylan appears behind her saying his gratitude over the donation. Dylan says he was assigned to the shrine but expected more people to come, however, Cassidy disappeared and was spirited away by the shrine. Cassidy appears in a school, seemingly unaware that she was in a trance or dream when Dylan goes to rescue her. While on the way out, Cassidy trips and she was bleeding, her ears won’t work which made her realize that she is not in reality. As soon as she realizes this, she falls through a row of Toriis and into a water, with Dylan shouting that she needs to realize why she was in this false reality and what her purpose is. She pauses, stating her purpose now is to get home. Back in the reality, Dylan as a fox asks her again what her purpose in joining the tournament was. Cassidy shrewdly answers about being a house-cleaner and going home again. After more prodding of Dylan, Cassidy admits that she was going to study medicine but fell through, she also stated she just wants to help people but she hasn’t done anything yet. Dylan suddenly transforms back to his Monkey-Fox yokai form, tripping Cassidy who then noted how cliché the ending was.
In Dylan’s canon reality, Cassidy visits the shrine despite being dilapidated and forgotten. She makes a donation and prays when Dylan, being the familiar hears and records her prayer, he then jumps off of excitement, scaring Cassidy. Dylan invites her for a dinner. While eating, Dylan tells the story of how the Kami of the Shrine has long left the shrine and the shrine is being kept by him because of sentimentality and empathy for it being forgotten. Cassidy then decides to help Dylan restore and fix the decrepit shrine, when suddenly a miasmic curse arrives. Cassidy’s presence as a human had attracted the miasma which could potentially spirit her away or worse, consume her soul. Dylan tries to use his fire fox powers to protect Cassidy as the curse rendered Cassidy immobile and her ears cannot protect her from spiritual attacks or curses. As the miasma closes in and Dylan’s nerfed powers fail him, Cassidy asks for a solution. Dylan reveals that a Kami could purify the miasma and he has the mark of the kami but has to be given with a kiss. In desperation, Cassidy kisses Dylan without thinking, granting her the mark and making Dylan her familiar. The two then drive the miasma curse away. The next day, to solidify the shrine’s revitalization, Cassidy performed the Kagura. Attracting the spirits and people alike and reviving the old shrine once again as its new kami.
Round 3
Kome Reidos (won, entry) vs Cassidy (lost, entry). Match page: C3 R3 - Kome vs Cassidy
In Cassidy’s reality, Cassidy in her Kemono form (as it was her peak) was excited to face Kome and to pay her back for getting too rough in training. She was surprised to see Kome already in her future form, and commented she looked as serious as ever. The battle began with Kome teleporting in front of Cassidy and trying to grab her face, but the headset stopped her. Going instead for SQUEEZING HER CHEEKS, Kome flipped Cassidy over to the ground, but the headset stopped the fall from hurting as well. Holding her in place by SQUEEZING HER CHEEKS, Kome summoned a huge sharp Vail crystal, stabbed the shield, and tried to make it grow inside in order to reach the headset. Cassidy pushed herself off Kome, using the shield to slide through the arena and stand again, noticing her reflexes to be more cat-like as well. Cassidy theorized Kome could not nucleate Vail crystals inside her field or she would have stabbed her already, but could likely make it grow once it had stabbed through to some degree. As she thought she had to keep her distance, Kome teleported behind her and put her on a chokehold (though the shields stopped it from actually choking her), and once again stabbed at the headset. This time managing to make the crystal grow in time, she damaged it and her arm closed on Cassidy’s throat - but to her shock a ghostly maw grabbed it and pulled her off the girl, forcing her to activate the Mindscape. There two spiritual temple liondogs had appeared, to protect Cassidy who was in her kami form. Angered by the interruption, Kome began fighting the guardians, and eventually Cassidy recovered consciousness inside the mindscape enough to see the battle ensue. Through struggling with the lions, Kome managed to defeat them in a brawl and redirected pieces of the mindscape on her opponent, causing a huge explosion - but much to her dismay the headset released a fail-over and shielded the Monomyth girl. Realizing the headset was at its limit, and Kome realizing her vail reserves were running low and dropping the Mindscape, they both decided to finish the other. Cassidy attempted to use a technique to banish evil spirits, but was surprised when it failed to affect Kome, who in turn began beating her. Getting on top and creating another vail blade, Kome derided Cassidy for having so much power granted but being aimless and weak to use it and ignore the hardships of the world. Cassidy replied she was sorry Kome had to face such a hard world and if she had to struggle so much to be powerful, but that even if it did not look like it, she was trying. She then blinded Kome with lights and flipped her over, before releasing hot tea Earl Grey on her face, burning her and running away through the destroyed arena, activating the tether of her headset. Kome attempted to activate the Mindscape, but she lacked enough vail and ultimately concluded she did not need it to defeat Cassidy. Surprised by Cassidy throwing her jacket at her, Cassidy held onto Kome’s arm, but the girl easily overpowered her and performed a judo flip - much to her shock, Cassidy had tethered herself to the arena, so Kome found herself landing alone out of bounds, giving Cassidy the victory.
In Kome’s canon reality, both girls reminisced the kind of lives they had, Kome her struggles in the harsh world to rise to the top in order to survive and Cassidy being carried to the moon by the headset and learning to accept her place in it while being safe. The match began, with Kome saying out loud she always wondered where she would end in her path, and transforming into her future form. Laughing loud much to the surprise of the onlookers -and exploding the Ant during it- the Future! Kome seemed to be overly joyed of finally being powerful. As Brat Pack commented on her change, Kome offered Cassidy the possibility to end her life quickly if she would humiliate herself and beg. Cassidy asked for time to consider it and requested to know Kome’s wish, to which the woman responded she wanted to be given control over every universe, to create an empire without mistakes or suffering, showing several Crabs working under her and some enslaved. On the audience, Wietse argued that the wish was to be made by the entire team, but Kome mocked her team asking who of them would be able to stop her. Seeing this, Cassidy responded to Kome’s offer by telling her the whole Ant situation had gotten over her head. Clearly incensed, Kome used her mindscape and tore several scars on Cassidy right away, considering the battle finished, then before the girl could react nor the headset attempt to heal her kicked her in the air. Confused at what was happening, Cassidy was then pinned down by several giant vail blades descending over her, but they were stopped by her headset. Kome commented on the headset’s strong capabilities, but noted the weakness she noticed in Cassidy’s Round 2 - that it lacked defense against the spiritual or mental. Having said that, she activated the upper mindscape, warping Cassidy and herself into the mind plane again and going through the forcefield, holding the girl. She then summoned several vail blades that impaled the girl, and went on to grab the headset - to her surprise, the headset electrocuted her sending her flying and waking up Cassidy. Battered and bruised, with the headset struggling to heal her and the shields deactivated, Cassidy nonetheless decided to fight and rushed towards her enemy, but Kome intercepted and began to soundly beat her much to the despair of her team. Upon hearing Maiden 4 words, she finally grabbed her opponent and, wondering out loud what all the training she did for was about anyways, flipped Kome against the ground, finally hurting her. Furious, Kome activated the mindscape once again and got on top of Cassidy, brutally beating her down while noting how “easy” her life and team selection had been compared to her own - through it, the headset finally adapted to what was occurring and responded by accelerating Cassidy’s mental synapses at space-travel velocities, allowing her to finally catch up with Kome’s speed and headbutt her off. Kome shouted Cassidy still had no chance and summoned a storm of vail blades, and, seeking through her past instead of her future, Cassidy used her own peak form, the kami form she took on the previous round, becoming once again a goddess and releasing several spirits to fight against the vail blades. As a small war ensued inside the arena, Kome and Cassidy charged at each other, and the second touched the first chest and activated her power, a powerful light blinding everything. Now in a deeper layer of the mind, Kome found herself back as usual. Breaking down, she grabbed Cassidy and asked what had she done, and Cassidy responded she wanted to talk to the real Kome, not her future version. Much like in her Round 2 then, Cassidy and Kome appeared in a fake mental school, and scenes of Japan, living “life” and discussing their lots. Kome told Cassidy about a friend of her world who had been good to her and how she could not forget it, and Cassidy told Kome about her failing to get into college, and how she landed onto Monomyth and felt not as capable as them, but still how she did want to help others. She noted Kome could be a hero, and how the nature of Empires was not based merely on asserting force over others, but in protecting their people, showing Kome’s Randolph’s grave. Back to the black void where they had appeared, Cassidy wondered if Kome did not know that already and if deep down she was not trying to gain power in a desperate effort to keep herself and her friends safe. Now on tears and remembering her team, Kome did not respond but hesitantly tried to continue the fight - yet to her surprise Cassidy surrendered. They appeared back in reality, and Cassidy asked Kome to promise her to find a way to make everyone happy if she got her wish. Before she could reply, the Gamemaster destroyed Cassidy for losing, leaving only her headset intact in front of a regretful Kome. After that, Kome apologized to their team, and asked Wietse to discuss the wish with her.
After Crab 3
After Brat Pack won, Kome revived Cassidy and returned her to her world. Although she is in the moon, Kome’s promise to her ensured she would be watched and the goddess will try to make her achieve happiness to the extent of her power. She is seen in the epilogue gazing at the balcony of the moon palace.
