Gretchen Evanborn is a participant of Crab 4, as a member of Sacred Coven. She is an elven ex-princess and recovering nymphomaniac who currently works as a cleric of the niche folk religion Mattology. What she lacks in intelligence and strength, she makes up for in charisma and gusto.
Appearance
Gretchen is a youthful fair skinned elf with blue eyes and long blonde hair styled with curtained bangs. She stands 5’4” tall and has a soft curvy physique. Her ears are long and pointed, extending several inches from her head.
Gretchen’s religious attire is a long pink robe with white trim and a nun’s-habit-styled hood. A tied rope worn around the waist is used to secure the robe.
Her combat attire is made up of a metal bikini-styled breastplate, a chunky gold chastity belt adorned with pink gemstones, knee-high plate-mail and leather boots featuring religious iconography, leather gloves, and a steel short sword in a leather sheath worn at her side.
Her ancient Egyptian attire is similar to her battle outfit, but removes the breastplate and gloves in favor of sparse mummy-like wrappings around her head, torso, arms, and knees. Her belt has lapis stones and a brown bottom, her boots swap the religious symbol for the hieroglyph for fruit basket, and she wears dark brown lipstick.
Her German outfit is identical to her religious attire, but recolored red with white trim. She has an alternate German costume composed of green lederhosen adorned with Mattological imagery, a cropped ruffled white blouse, and a green trilby with a red feather. Her boot plates swap the golden apple for a pine tree graphic and her hair is styled in two upward arcing segmented pigtails.
For Round 3, four designs were put forward as options for people to use depending on the opponent. The first is identical to her standard outfit.
The second is a “warlock” outfit, comprised of a black leather strapless bra, bottom, cape, and thigh-high boots. The belt is iron adorned with silver gems and a lock designed to look like a skull. She wears a black choker, black lipstick with running eyeliner, and has her hair pointed into devil horns.
The third is a “clown” outfit, consisting of a white bralet with red frills, a polka dot bottom with gold belt, large red clown shoes, and a clown nose. She wears a blue flower on her top, has red, blue, and yellow gems on her belt, and trades her sword for a balloon sword.
The fourth is her “furry hunter” costume, which has her topless with blood paint patterns on her face, ears, chest, arms, and legs. She wears a brown loincloth with fur leg warmers, two rabbit’s feet modeled after Melody and Dizzy on necklace, and a headpiece made of Dolly’s head.
Personality
Gretchen is a friendly individual with an overall sunny disposition. She is playful and flirty, but has a desperate need to be liked and an extremely low set of standards in partners that can drive people away.
Gretchen has an intellectual disability, which has resulted in her being fairly childish, gullible, and unable to read the current situation properly. However, she has a good imagination and excels in thinking outside the box.
As a recovering nymphomaniac, she has poor impulse control and a low self esteem. Upon joining the Church of Mattology, she has become devoutly religious; dedicating most of her time to the church. She does missionary work, charitable endeavors, and is often working the children’s youth camp. While chastity is not a requirement of Mattology, she undertook a vow to it as a means of self help.
Her hobbies are drawing, coloring, nature walks, and looking at silly birds.
Powers and Abilities
As a cleric of Mattology, she can call upon divine abilities bestowed to her by her deity, Matt. These powers are rooted in nature and radiant energy and include, but are not limited to, healing, boons, summoning, and projectile attacks.
Gretchen wields a steel sword, but only has basic combat skills.
Her elven origin makes her resistant to fae magic, disease, and aging. Gretchen herself is a carrier of Elven Wood Rot, a devastating sexually transmitted disease that can cause necrosis and death. She, however, is not affected by it.
Gretchen is also quite knowledgeable in Mattological scripture and conventionally attractive; the latter of which she has often used to her advantage.
Background
Gretchen hails from the high fantasy realm of Yarth. She was born Gretchen Ayndrowyn, princess of the small Elven kingdom of Ayndrolund. The sole child of the King and Queen, they tried their best to mold Gretchen into a future ruler, but her unruly personality and intellectual shortcomings made her family regard her as an embarrassment to the throne, and following some high profile acts of nymphomania in her late teens, she was banished from Ayndrolund and stripped of her title.
Over the next 80 or so years, Gretchen traveled the world a vagrant. She tried her hand as an adventurer, but often failed to impress party members. She often found herself in brothels and inns of ill-repute. A carrier of Elven Wood Rot, a rare sexually transmitted disease, her escapades are responsible for a sizeable pandemic that killed many. When not given residency in whorehouses, she often found herself locked up in asylums, of which she’s gotten pretty good at escaping.
While in the Jefe Lands, she met Father James Evanchurch, a roaming missionary fresh off of assisting victims of the Dwarvan Isles Sinkhole Disaster. Through him, she learned of the religion Mattology, and quickly became a devout follower due to its teaching of tolerance and nature. Eager to turn a new leaf, she used what little money she had to construct a locked belt to keep her chaste and followed Father James back to the Mattological nation of Aedenappel to work as a religious acolyte.

Pit Entry
Gretchen (WON) versus Florida Man (LOSS)
Sent by mentor Father James Evanchurch to retrieve a key lime pie for the church bake sale, Gretchen travels to Florida and encounters the titular Man holding the titular pie. After asking nicely was denied, Gretchen drew her weapon, then drew out her plan to defeat Florida Man (in crayon.) After summarizing her intentions, Florida punched Gretchen in the face, then beat her to a pulp. Before he could kill her, he was arrested by a nearby police officer and taken to jail; leaving the key lime pie behind. After weeks of recovery, Gretchen returns to Aedenappel with the pie, having missed the bake sale, but successful in her mission.
Round 1
Gretchen (WON - NSFW) versus Dizzy Rabbit (LOSS - NSFW) in MIN’S FESTIVAL.
Canon
In Gretchen’s victory scenario, she is competing against Dizzy in an erotic dance off in an effort to inspire the pharaoh to ejaculate into the Nile river, as is customary during Min’s Festival.
While initially losing to Dizzy’s hyper-sexual routine, Gretchen summons Hays Code creator Will H. Hays to censor Dizzy, turning her into a non-sexual cartoon rabbit.
Gretchen ultimately succeeds not through her performance, but by showing the pharaoh a pamphlet featuring Gretchen unknowingly performing extremely niche fetishes. The pharaoh is able to perform his duty and Gretchen wins.
Dizzy, still a regular rabbit, is instead brought back to Sacred Coven headquarters as a mascot named “Matt Junior.” Dizzy swears revenge when the Hays Code expires.
Non-canon
In Dizzy’s victory scenario, Dizzy attempts to swipe a crystal from the Min festival by posing as the goddess Unut, gaining additional help from an inside man on the pharaoh’s guard. Meanwhile, Gretchen is assisted by the disciples of Yakub, who seek to overthrow the Age of Ra.
Yakub’s agents interrupt the ceremony just as Dizzy is about to receive the crystal and attack. A fight ensues, with Gretchen joining Dizzy’s side due to the Yakubites’ racist language. The duo team up to win the crystal together, defeating Yakub’s forces as well as beating up the pharaoh.
Aftermath
Bunny Dizzy aka Matt Junior was kept at Sacred Coven headquarters by the team as a pet and Gretchen’s “best friend.” Matt Junior’s teammates, The Null Stars, have expressed interest in rescuing her from captivity and returning her to normal before the start of Round 2.
Round 2
Gretchen (WON) versus Melody (LOSS) in Chocolate House.
Canon
In Gretchen’s scenario, she is competing against Melody in a chocolate dessert bake-off with the winner being decided by judges Debbie, M4tron, and Atta.
Gretchen and Matt Jr. make a Mattmas chocolate pie. Melody makes her mother’s chocolate cake, but is influenced by Atta to add soul poison to the mix to infect the hosts and the bench Crabs in attendance.
After being pressured by her team leader Clovis to succeed, facing insecurity from initial praises of Gretchen’s cooking, and not being herself due to the soul poison, Melody decides to kill Gretchen in the back room.
A fight occurs, resulting in Gretchen being crushed by a stand mixer. Melody snaps out of it and tries to help Gretchen before realizing her cake is burning in the oven.
A bruised and bloodied Gretchen appears behind Melody and purifies her cake, unburning it and inadvertently exorcising the soul poison. When questioned as to why, Gretchen preaches forgiveness and a desire to beat Melody at her best.
Upon trying the dishes, Debbie enjoys Gretchen’s, but the other two judges are put off by Matt Jr.’s fur being in the food. M4tron enjoys Melody’s cake more, leaving the deciding vote to Atta. Noticing the soul poison is gone from the cake, Atta votes Gretchen out of spite.
Gretchen wins, Melody apologizes, and after seeing an angered Clovis in the crowd, asks to join Gretchen as her second bunny to lay low.
In an epilogue, Dizzy reverts back to normal and begins strangling Gretchen.
Non-canon
In Melody’s victory scenario, she is tasked with hindering and killing a CRAB in her challenge against Gretchen. She meets up with Gretchen in Germany and tries various ways of killing her, such as whacking her with a tree and stabbing her with a knife, but these are misconstrued as acts of friendship by Gretchen, causing Melody to stop before finishing the job.
In town, the two visit a confectionary to make chocolate houses. While searching for a cross for her chocolate church, Melody attempts to shoot Gretchen with the gun provided to her at the start of the story, but can’t bring herself to do it.
Gretchen, noticing this, asks why, and Melody explains it’s her task, but she’s not good enough to complete it. Gretchen comforts Melody with a Mattological parable of a farmer and an aristocrat who must plant apple trees for Matt. The aristocrat used his wealth to try and make the perfect apple, but it came out bitter. The farmer used love and care and made the best apples Matt ever tasted. She tells Melody she’s good enough as she is and that makes Melody feel better.
The pep-talk allows Gretchen to complete her goal of helping a CRAB. She then helps Melody complete her list by “hindering” her chocolate church by allowing Melody to eat the candy cross, and Melody inadvertently kills a CRAB by accidentally discharging the gun at a nearby cliffside, causing a big rock to fall on Gretchen’s teammate Adel.
The two then bake an apple pie and become friends.
Aftermath
Following Round 2, Gretchen gained Melody as a friend and temporary roommate. Matt Jr. transformed back into Dizzy and got her revenge on Gretchen by strangling her and tying her up, but the two have since reconciled.
Round 3
Gretchen (WON) versus Ivy (LOSS) in The Inner Bucket.
Canon
In Gretchen’s victory scenario, neither Gretchen nor Ivy are excited about the final battle. Ivo insists Ivy defeat Gretchen to get the wish. Ivy wants her childhood friend to be alive again, but doesn’t want to take an innocent life to get the wish. Gretchen draws herself defeating Ivy, but ultimately thinks Ivy is nice and has a better shot at winning than she does. Nevertheless, both competitors head to the Inner Bucket the next day to fight.
Gretchen gets a gothic makeover courtesy of Melody and Dizzy to help her get pumped for the event. Ivy, knowing Gretchen is serious on fighting, prepares for battle. The fight begins and Gretchen sends a guiding bolt at Ivy, which is deflected back into Gretchen’s face via one of Ivy’s spells. Gretchen attempts to summon spirit guardians, but Ivy disables her ability to cast spells. Gretchen draws her sword and charges as a last resort, but Ivy teleports it high into the sky above the arena.
Completely out of options, Ivy goes to town by plaguing Gretchen with several internal itchiness, invertebrate-infested insides, and inverting her intestines… Italianly. Gretchen falls and Ivy pleads to D.O.O.M.V.A. to allow her to spare her opponent, as she has shown full mastery over her. D.O.O.M.V.A. and the crowd disagree, as they felt the fight was too easy and want Gretchen killed.
Angered, Ivy refuses. She restores Gretchen back to full health, drops her weapon, and surrenders. Gretchen, touched by someone wanting to sacrifice themselves for her, hugs Ivy, and refuses to kill her either. Seemingly won over, D.O.O.M.V.A. is about to approve a stalemate, but suddenly the sword that Ivy teleported earlier comes crashing down, decapitating Ivy and setting her ablaze. Gretchen is distraught as she’s declared the winner, but prays for Ivy to go to heaven.
Ivy wakes up in Aedenappel; Mattological heaven, adorned in a pink robe. Gretchen’s god Matt appears before her and passes final judgement; determining her to be more than worthy of his afterlife. Ivy is hesitant, but is greeted by her murdered childhood friend Uni, who is now in Aedenappel due to a strong childhood love of McDon-Don’s apple slices. With everything squared up, Ivy accepts the offer and ascends to heaven.
Non-canon
In Ivy’s victory scenario, the match between Ivy and Gretchen is billed as the “silliest match.” Ivy is visibly nervous about the fight and does not want to do it. Before the fight begins, Ivy reflects on her and Gretchen’s interactions in CRAB.
She recalls shutting the door on Gretchen when she first started going door-to-door to spread the word of Matt, as well as angrily telling Gretchen to fuck off after Ivy’s Round 1 loss. After Round 2, Gretchen visits Ivy one more time to say she’ll stop bothering Ivy, but Ivy apologizes and invites her and rabbit Melody in.
After boring everybody with an endless Matt praise, Ivy asks Gretchen about herself. Gretchen goes over her history of being disowned and her sex addiction, before showing off her chastity belt. When Ivy asks how she uses the bathroom with that thing on, Gretchen reveals she doesn’t. She just holds it and heals her bladder constantly.
Ivy uses a bobby pin to spring the lock, allowing Gretchen to use the bathroom. Gretchen does so, destroying Ivy’s bathroom in the process, but gaining a new friend. After a montage of the two discussing cute boys and Ivy’s past, it then cuts to Round 3 announcements, where Ivy is hurt to see she’s been made to face off against Gretchen in a battle to the death; cursing out Debbie in the process.
In the fight, which has now just started, Gretchen is revealed to be in furry hunter attire, and hocks a spear at Ivo, who catches it in his teeth. Ivy asks why Gretchen is doing this, and she says that she thought if she killed Ivo, she wouldn’t have to kill Ivy. The two hug and cry and when chastised by D.O.O.M.V.A., Ivy casts a spell causing it to implode.
Aftermath
Gretchen survived Round 3 with a victory, making her undefeated in Crab 4. As part of her team Sacred Coven, they placed 5th overall.
In the epilogue side story “What Zehya Deserves,” Gretchen reaches out to a broken post-Round 3 Zehya and befriends her in an attempt to save her.
Role in CRAB
Gretchen acts as a notable side character and comic relief throughout Crab 4, primarily appearing in Sacred Coven storylines. She is the catalyst for Dizzy Rabbit’s transformation and cloning plot, acts as the turning point in Melody vs. Clovis plotline, and concludes Ivy’s CRAB journey. She features prominently in Zehya’s character arc, being one of her first interactions in Crab 4 and giving a shot at redemption to Zehya at its conclusion. Additionally, her beauty is one of the primary motivators for Mendi, as he lusts after her most of the competition.

Round 1
Ellie v. Lovell: (Canon) Gretchen appears several times in the comic. She wonders aloud if Matt can beat Lovell while at the Sacred Coven’s meeting table. After meeting Lovell, she bemoans that “Matt would have been nicer” to Ellie. Ellie later frightens Gretchen by teleporting back to base directly next to her.
Fluxxo v. Needle: (Canon) Gretchen is seen walking towards the portal to Egypt with the other Sacred Coven members. Fluxxo runs by the team in the other direction, lowers his shades, and says “Ladies.”
Ignatius v. Jugglejack: (Canon) Gretchen is depicted with Dizzy fighting off hordes of lecherous Yakubian men as Ignatius and Jugglejack ride by on a sandboard.
Zehya v. Atta: (Non-canon) Gretchen is among the team members that greet Zehya in the morning.
Round 2
Dizzy v. Jun-Ho: (Canon) Gretchen appears bound, gagged, and topless at the end of the story as punishment for bunnifying Dizzy the previous round.

Head Investigator v. Leo: (Canon) Gretchen, referred to as “The Slut” assists Leo in rescuing a kidnapped child from the elves. After finding the lost child however, Gretchen is punched in the face by Head Investigator and knocked out cold.
Clovis v. Zehya: (Canon) Gretchen appears in the crowd at the start of the comic.
Atta v. Diane: (Non-canon) Gretchen joins her soul poisoned teammates as part of Atta’s mind-controlled witches coven. The spell is broken and Diane asks for her sword, which she provides, allowing Diane to stab Atta. Gretchen burns with the others after Ash shoots the cauldron. According to the author, Gretchen is not actually soul poisoned, as her soul is too pure. She just went along with her Covenmates’ activities because they are friends.
Zehya v. Clovis: (Non-canon) Gretchen does not physically appear, but Melody mentions having an argument with her right before an explosion respawns her at the Crabstar Med Bay.
Ririna v. Speedrun: (Non-canon) While not appearing physically, after Ririna is declared the winner, Speedrun claims he’s still able to fight. Ririna threatens to call Gretchen, which causes Speedrun to back down.
Round 3
Kell v. Ellie (Canon) Gretchen appears in the crowd with other Crabs reacting to the moon’s destruction.
Zehya v. Shirley (Canon) Gretchen plays a major role in the story as she sets up a group blessing for all of her teammates, Melody, and Hemma. When attempting to get Zehya to join in, Zehya abruptly snaps and murders all present, thus beginning the murder mystery plotline. Gretchen is left bleeding on the ground with her Mattological cross chopped in half. Later in the story, part of Atta’s motive is mentioned to be eliminating Gretchen, who has the power to cure her soul poison.
Ignatius v. Head Investigator (Canon) Gretchen witnesses the massive explosion of Bog!Investigator and proclaims “By Matt’s Beard.”
Clovis v. Diana (Canon) Gretchen appears in the crowd with her Sacred Coven teammates. She is among the many people annihilated by Clovis’ bomb.
Jugglejack v. Melody (Canon) Gretchen appears in Melody’s memories as Jugglejack goads her into continuing the fight.
Gilroy v. Toabyak (Canon) Gretchen appears as a nightmarish worm monster popping out of a giant apple that is scaring Ivy.
Mendi v. Houndclops (Canon) While she does not physically appear, during Mendi’s final monologue, he bemoans that despite his desire and Gretchen’s sex-crazed nature, she does not notice him and goes for guys that are more fulfilling emotionally.
Ririna v. Kelly (Non-canon) Gretchen appears early in the comic, pointing out how cute fluffy Kelly looks. Gretchen notably plays a role in the Best Ending. In it, Ririna dons a power suit based on Gretchen. While Kelly thinks Ririna has become weaker by emulating Gretchen, Ririna prays to Matt, who turns all contestants into animals. Gretchen is turned into a rabbit, much like her friends Dizzy and Melody.
Head Investigator v. Ignatius (Non-canon) All active Crabs appear in this comic. Gretchen is sliced in half by Head Investigator during the time freeze battle.
Melody v. Jugglejack (Non-canon) Gretchen is seated next to Adel in the crowd for the fight. After Jugglejack’s misuse of Adel’s spellbook, Meteor X crashes down on Adel, causing Gretchen to spill her popcorn.

Life Within CRAB
Gretchen is infamous for her dispersing of Mattological pamphlets to other Crabs, which has annoyed some. Clovis Cardige accepted a pamphlet from her solely to refute all of its claims, though according to the side story Faith and Facts, Clovis has become somewhat enamored by the strange religion.
Gretchen was criticized by Zehya Kovelan for her inappropriate attire as a holy woman. She has also tangled with teammate Adelheid “Adel” Rosenkruez Greisha due to personality differences. She gets along well with Ellie, but is often startled by her giant eyeball. Gretchen and Ririna are on good terms, but Ririna will occasionally trick Gretchen with incorrect modern slang.
Gretchen went rabbit hunting once with Kelly Foxtrot, much to Dizzy’s dismay. Dizzy Rabbit also has a negative opinion of Gretchen after the latter turned Dizzy into a regular rabbit and kept her as a pet. Dizzy assisted Gretchen in her Round 2 baking competition, but after reverting back into a humanoid rabbit at the end, Dizzy strangled Gretchen, tied her up, and left her for dead somewhere.
Gretchen has a tumultuous friendship with Leon Lizard. During photo day, Gretchen threw Leon, assuming he was trying to eat her lunch. Leon was thrown at Marv the Alien, who was just passing by in the breakroom. As penance, Gretchen provided both Leon and Marv with apple pie and cider (juice in Leon’s case.) Gretchen has since become decent friends with Leon. After Leon was thought to be burnt to a crisp, Gretchen briefly adopted him as “Diesel Junkie Jr.” before Leon’s compatriot Dolly mauled her and retrieved him.
After Dolly’s death during The Great Stowaway Purge, Gretchen found the body and harvested it to make a deer’s head mantle piece for her room, venison jerky, deer hide clothes, and glue. This made Leon, deep into his edgy arc, upset enough to try and kill Gretchen, but she was able to avoid his gunshot. As penance, she sent him an apology card and helped plan Dolly’s funeral.
Gretchen, along with other members of Sacred Coven, was spied on by Marv the Alien while showering at Sacred Coven headquarters. Gretchen instinctively covered her hands to thwart the peeping tom. Menachemmendelle has also shown lustful interest in Gretchen.
Gretchen has a tumultuous relationship with D.O.O.M.V.A. after she accidentally made a mess on the roomba’s carpet at least four times. As punishment, Gretchen was chained to a post in the ground like a dog in a fashion similar to Zehya.
Gretchen is friends with Giggles, having done modeling for Clown Light ads to raise money for Giggles’ college fund.
Later in the tournament, Gretchen enlisted Melody and Dizzy to become her financial advisors, investing in products like CRABCoin and marketable plushies. Kelly was eventually onboarded to be Gretchen and Adel’s brand manager.
Gretchen is also a member of the CRAB Tournament Homestar Runner Roleplaying Club with Leon, Berno, Jugglejack, Fluxxo, Gilroy, and Clovis. Gretchen roleplays as Strong Mad.

- Gretchen is one of nine Crabs to compete in all three rounds and go undefeated, along with Ash, Berno, Clovis, Fluxxo, Hemma, Kell, Kelly, and Smoke. Gretchen is the only undefeated CRAB from Sacred Coven.
- Gretchen ranked 4th in season-end overall accumulated votes at 61.
